During the month of October, people across the country come together in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 1 in 8 women develop breast cancer, but with today’s technology and advancements in early detection, that number could decline. During this time of increased awareness, we encourage everyone to contribute to the goal of educating women on early detection, supporting patients and their families, and funding continued research to one day find a cure. Here are a few ways that you can get involved, either here in Johnston County or as part of the national effort.
Events
Carolina Premium Outlets Pink Event
Carolina Premium Outlets is teaming up with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research during October. Throughout the month, you can visit the Information Center at the outlets and donate $10 to support the cause, and you will receive 25% off one item at participating stores. The Information Center is open Monday – Saturday from 10 am till 9 pm, and Sunday from 11 am till 7 pm. Learn more.
Ladies Night Out
We are hosting our second annual Ladies Night Out for breast cancer awareness on October 22. This is a FREE, educational event for women in our community to learn about breast cancer and women’s health and wellness. You will have the opportunity to speak with our physicians and medical experts about mammograms, self-breast exams, cancer treatments, gynecological health, and much more. There will be food, a raffle, door prizes, and the opportunity to visit with local vendors. Gather your friends, family, and neighbors and join us for a fun, informative evening focused on YOUR health! Learn more.
Make Your Own Event!
It’s not too late to plan something of your own. Host a car wash or bake sale to raise some funds, or have a pink-themed party and ask everyone to make a donation. Races and other fitness challenges are also a great way to fundraise. For a low key event, organize a breast cancer trivia night with friends and family to test your knowledge and make sure everyone knows the facts about screenings and early detection.
Donations
The Johnston Health Angel Fund
Help cancer patients right here in Johnston County! The Johnston Health Foundation established the Angel Fund to raise money for oncology patients who are going through financial hardships. At our cancer centers in Smithfield and Clayton, our doctors and staff had started taking money out of their own pockets to help their patients pay for medications or transportation. Now, the Angel Fund is able to help cancer patients by covering the cost of medications, supplying gas cards or other means of transportation to treatments, buying prosthesis and wigs, and more. Donate now.
National Foundations
To help advance breast cancer research or fund larger-scale programs for breast cancer patients, there are many national foundations that you can donate to.
