The odds of surviving breast cancer increase dramatically the earlier it’s discovered, which is why it is so important to get your yearly mammogram. At Johnston Health, we have the latest innovations in technology with our new 3D Mammography. 3D Mammography provides more detailed images of the breast tissue allowing for earlier detection of breast cancer. It also eliminates fewer callbacks and provides faster results.
What is 3D Mammography?
Digital breast tomosynthesis (tomo), also known as 3D mammography, is a revolutionary new screening and diagnostic breast imaging tool to improve the early detection of breast cancer. During the 3D part of the exam, an x-ray arm sweeps over the breast, taking multiple images in seconds. Images are displayed as a series of thin slices that can be viewed by our radiologists as individual images or in a dynamic interactive animation.
What to Expect
A mammogram can be stressful and scary, especially if it is your first time, but our experienced staff will thoroughly explain the procedure and make sure you feel at ease the entire time. During the exam, a technologist will position your breast within the mammography unit. The technologist will then gradually compress your breast and images will be taken from multiple angles. This will be repeated on the other breast. You may be asked to hold your breath and keep very still while an image is being taken to ensure the best possible clarity. A screening mammogram takes about 15 minutes, and a diagnostic mammogram can take longer depending on how many images need to be taken.
